Problem: How can we disrupt the unhealthy grind culture in the Art Foundation program?

Team: Commercial artists (3 members), VCUarts Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, middle Of broad, Storefront for Community Design, VCU student counselor, AFO student representatives

Tools: Pinterest, G Suite, Adobe CC, commercial printing

Role: Researcher, graphic designer
Process: We assessed the issue by surveying students and analyzing the space that houses the program. I collected examples of both historical and contemporary grounding techniques and objects. We ideated, then we presented rough designs to a panel and fabricated prototypes based on their feedback. I designed a pair of posters to deliver our final pitch.

Solution: Window decals and fidget objects remind and guide students through Dialectical Behavioral Therapy exercises, inspired by the Catholic traditions of stained glass and prayer beads.

Outcome: A team member continued to work with the AFO program to finalize, cut, and strategically install the window decals around campus.
